Week 13 Discussion Question

November 20th, 2007 · 6 Comments
Discussion Questions

This is the last discussion question of the semester!  Comments will be closed on Sunday, November 25.  I suggest doing it earlier than that, though, since it’s good process work for your synthesis essay.

For this discussion, write as much as you can about your image.  Describe what’s in it.  Explain what it means and how you know.  Who made the image?  For whom?  Why?  Where did the image first appear?  What limitations did the creator have in making the image?  How do these constraints impact the image?

If you can, include the image in your comment or provide a link to it.

For one extra point, respond to other people’s comments.  If they provided a link to the image, do you see things to describe they left out?

I couldn’t find a link to the image I’m using, but I suppose I can describe it the best I can. the image is of an Indian woman in her seventies. she is dressed in traditional robes and has a smile that is enchanting. The image is so warm and happy and welcoming that it makes her look beautiful and gracious. I’m not sure who took the photo, but he did it for national geographic. What really impacted me is how happy she was affected how beautiful she was. she was’nt worried about make up, she was just happy to have her picture taken. and it shows

Thanks for posting, Matt! I’m wondering, though, how this image will tie in to your paper. Any ideas there?

The image I am using is here: http://maxweber.hunter.cuny.edu/pub/eres/EDSPC715_MCINTYRE/sbAngelDevil.jpg
The image is of a person with a devil and and angel in front of him. I am going to use it to demostrate that people will displace responsibility involved with choices to others. The man in the pic will say the devil or the angel made him do it.

I don’t know when the image was first posted or what limations it has on it. i just thought it fit in with my paper very well.

I found my image to really inspire me towards the making of my essay in wich it reveals the status of the polar bears on thin ice, in danger of drowning. I found this picture in the daily mail website, i really put it in mind that due to global warming such things are happening that not many of us take in mind. Due to the atmosphere being thikend by pollution the temperatures are rising causing such things to occur.

The image i am using is a cartoon by Eric Olson. The man is sitting on a step in his basement where there must have been a leak of some sort which flooded the basement. He is holding a wrench possibly meaning he will attempt to fix a leak or caused it. He seems droopy or lethargic and we can see his reflection in the pool of water. The caption below the pictrue states, “This will be a wonderful day for self reflection.” This image at face value can be read as the man finds it to be a good day to look at his reflection in the pool of water. What i get from this image, which can tie into my essay is the man can use this day to reflect on himself, his life, his day. This unexpected episode causes him to take a step out of his own agenda and take a look at what is going on in his life.

In one of the images I picked, this picture is of a girl with the words “thin” on the page. This picture was used for a documentary on HBO about the realities of eating disorders among pre-teen girls and how they are effected by the media’s eye. Which I also think this picture could also tie into another theme of self image which I think this picture is a huge part of. The girl in the photo has a blank look across her face as if she was looking for someone that she needs to please or as if she is trying to define her own image. In this case with the photo it seems like the media’s influence effected her and got the worst of her which is what the media does a lot of the time to many young adults and even adults.
